Online Gambling Fuels Divorce Surge in Indonesia, Courts Report Cover-Ups

Despite attempts to hide the real reasons, online gambling addiction and resulting financial woes are fueling a rise in divorce rates in Indonesia. In Cianjur alone, 2,038 divorce cases were recorded in the first half of 2026.
Indonesian courts are sounding the alarm: even though many couples try to conceal the true reasons for their marriage breakdown, online gambling addiction remains a primary driver of rising divorce rates. Judges are facing increasingly sophisticated methods to hide the actual cause in legal filings.
Especially in provinces like West Java, considered a hotspot for illegal online gambling, the impacts are dramatic. Psychological factors and the fear of shame play a significant role when women merely mention their husbands' gambling problems as footnotes in divorce petitions. However, upon closer examination, gambling addiction often emerges as the core issue.
Numbers and facts
Divorce rates in some parts of Indonesia show further sharp increases. At the Religious Court in Cianjur, the capital of Cianjur Regency in West Java, significantly more divorce petitions were filed in the first week of July compared to the same period last year. Last year, the court handled a total of 4,805 divorce cases, with online gambling addiction explicitly cited as the main cause in 102 of them. For the first half of 2026, there were already 2,038 cases, less than half of last year's total. However, court officials point out that case numbers typically begin to rise in August, peaking in September or October. This year, the court said, the peak has started earlier.
Judge Ahmad Yani from Cianjur, West Java, succinctly describes the tactics of concealment:
“Nowadays, people are neatly packaging references to their spouse’s online gambling problems and hiding them in lawsuits.” - Ahmad Yani, Judge in Cianjur Regency, West Java
Yani further stated that the reasons written in the draft lawsuits were often disguised as arguments about 'a lack of income' or 'irresponsible attitude' of the husband. An investigation by the Indonesian anti-money laundering agency (Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center) in 2024 at the Cianjur Religious Court revealed “massive financial losses” in gambling addiction-affected households. These losses ranged from couples selling their cars and motorbikes to individuals mortgaging their parents' houses to fund their gambling addiction. Two studies from ResearchGate substantiate these observations. A December 2024 study for East Jakarta shows that gambling addiction causes severe financial problems, mental health disorders, and an erosion of trust. Another from July 2024 points to an increase in gambling-related divorce cases in Indonesia, peaking in 2023. It describes the impact of online gambling on marital relationships as significant, caused by financial conflicts and reduced communication.
Background
Online gambling is illegal in Indonesia but thrives underground. The country's strict Islamic laws sometimes even stipulate corporal punishment for gamblers. For example, a court in Aceh last month ordered a gambler to be given five lashes with a cane. These drastic measures demonstrate the authorities' determination to curb the problem. However, the easy accessibility and often advertised economic incentives of online gambling, as highlighted by the ResearchGate studies, contribute to the issue. Despite couples' attempts to disguise the reality, gambling remains the 'root cause of most domestic conflict,' the court found. Judge Yani does not expect the trend to subside: “We don’t expect the current wave of divorces to subside.”
Why it matters for German players
The situation in Indonesia, where online gambling is illegal yet rampant, illustrates the downsides of an unregulated market. In Germany, since the State Treaty on Gambling 2021 (GlüStV 2021), we have a highly regulated market. This is intended to protect players from precisely the scenarios we hear about from Indonesia. Players in Germany can legally and securely play at providers licensed by the Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States (GGL). These casinos can be found on the GGL's so-called Whitelist.
The GlüStV 2021 has established strict rules. These include a bet limit of 1 Euro per spin on slot machines and a monthly deposit limit of 1,000 Euros, which is monitored via the LUGAS system. LUGAS is a central limit and player blocking system that coordinates blocks and deposits across all licensed providers. This aims to prevent excessive play and the development of addiction problems. Unlike Indonesia, where players in illegal markets risk their savings and ruin families, Germany aims to ensure high player protection. The regulation aims to protect players and minimize the negative social consequences of gambling addiction. A look at countries with uncontrolled markets clarifies the necessity of these measures. Therefore, German players should only play at GGL-licensed providers to be best protected.
What it means for GGL-licensed casinos
For online casinos holding a German license from the GGL, the situation in Indonesia serves as a caution. The drastic effects of uncontrolled online gambling on families and finances underscore the importance of the GlüStV 2021's protective measures. GGL-licensed casinos must not view the strict player protection requirements as mere formalities. They are an essential component in preventing such dramatic social consequences. Adhering to the 1 Euro bet limit and the 1,000 Euro deposit limit, connecting to LUGAS, and complying with all advertising restrictions are not only legally mandated but also serve to protect players and maintain a responsible gambling market. These measures help to identify and contain addictive behavior early on. This prevents gambling from becoming a primary cause of broken families and immense debts in Germany, as is currently the case in Indonesia. Continuous awareness of player protection and strict application of the rules are therefore of utmost importance.
