Doug Polk Transitions to New Role at The Lodge Card Club

Poker pro Doug Polk announced his departure from an active role at The Lodge Card Club but will remain a shareholder. His decision follows turbulent months for the club, including a raid in March.
Doug Polk, the well-known professional poker player, has surprisingly announced his stepping down from an active management position at The Lodge Card Club. He will remain a shareholder in the club but is relinquishing all operational duties. This decision comes after a period of upheaval for the Texan poker establishment.
Polk attributes his move to increasing commitments to other businesses and his family. “With several other projects demanding more of my time, and my family continuing to grow, I’ve decided this is the right time to step back from my involvement with The Lodge so I can focus more fully on those priorities,” Polk stated. This change marks the end of an intensive phase during which he was significantly involved in building and leading the club.
Numbers and facts
Doug Polk became a co-owner of The Lodge in 2022 alongside fellow poker professionals Andrew Neeme and Brad Owen. Just a year later, in March 2026, the club in Round Rock faced a raid by Texas authorities. This investigation into alleged gambling offenses led to a two-month closure and employee layoffs. A scheduled World Poker Tour event had to be postponed. However, The Lodge reopened in May 2026, without criminal charges being filed against the club or its ownership. PokerNews reported in April 2026 that all charges against The Lodge Card Club were officially dropped, much to the relief of the Texas poker community.
Background
The situation for card clubs in Texas has been complex for some time. Texas gambling law does not allow for rake, the percentage of each pot a casino takes. Card clubs circumvent this by charging membership or seat fees, which constitutes a grey area and frequently leads to legal disputes. The raid and subsequent closure of The Lodge highlighted this uncertainty for the entire industry in Texas. The halting of investigations and the reopening were therefore important signals for many. Despite stepping down, Polk expresses great confidence in The Lodge’s future:
“The Lodge has accomplished a great deal over the past several years, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped make that possible,” he wrote. “I have every confidence in the current management team, employees, and ownership… I expect The Lodge will continue to thrive.”
His personal commitment was merely a consequence of increased family and business demands. Polk also works as a coach at Upswing Poker, where he shares his knowledge with many aspiring poker players. Polk is known for his extensive poker knowledge and his ability to play nosebleed stakes games for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Why it matters for German players
For German players participating in the regulated online gambling market, such developments in Texas have no direct impact. German law is clearly defined by the Gambling State Treaty 2021, or GlüStV 2021. This treaty has created a nationwide unified legal framework and sets strict rules for online casinos. The focus here is on player protection and channeling gambling into legal avenues. Since the introduction of GlüStV 2021, online casino providers must hold a German license from the Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States (GGL). The GGL maintains a so-called whitelist of all approved providers.
Players in Germany can only play at casinos listed on this whitelist. These casinos are subject to conditions such as a monthly deposit limit of 1,000 euros and a stake limit of one euro per spin on slot machines. There is also the central player blocking system LUGAS, which aims to ensure comprehensive player and youth protection. Players should therefore always rely on the GGL whitelist and avoid unlicensed providers, whether they are from Malta (MGA) or Curaçao. The German market is designed to prevent fraud and create a safe gaming environment, in stark contrast to the legal grey areas that sometimes exist in other jurisdictions.
What it means for GGL-licensed casinos
For GGL-licensed casinos, such news from the international poker business primarily confirms their own strictly regulated path. The incidents at The Lodge Card Club, which led to a regulatory raid and closure despite good intentions, demonstrate the pitfalls of legal uncertainties. German online casinos benefit from the clear and transparent regulatory framework of the GGL. They operate on a solid legal basis. This creates not only trust among players but also planning security for providers. The events in Texas emphasize once again how important comprehensive and clear regulation is to ensure both player protection and fair competition. For GGL-licensed casinos, this is a clear advantage, as they have fewer legal uncertainties to contend with.
