Sneaky Bonus Traps: Finnish Test Reveals Hidden Costs in Online Casinos

Fiese Bonus-Fallen: Finnischer Test entlarvt versteckte Kosten bei Online-CasinosAI-GENERATED

A Finnish test of 50 online casinos revealed that advertised wagering multipliers often give an incomplete picture of the actual requirements. In 44% of cases, the required betting volume doubled.

Finnish consumer protection advocates have recently presented alarming results regarding bonus conditions in online casinos. Realistic checks at 50 providers revealed that advertised wagering multipliers often convey a distorted picture of the required game stakes. This test provides important insight into the practices of foreign-licensed casinos, just before Finland launches its own regulated market in July 2027. German players, in particular, should pay close attention here.

The company Kasinohai conducted these detailed checks between June 15 and 30, 2026. Researchers registered accounts, deposited money, and meticulously documented the bonus conditions. The results show significant deficiencies in the transparency and user-friendliness of many offers.

Numbers and facts

The study found various methods for calculating wagering requirements. In 22 cases, which represent 44% of the sample, the total amount to be wagered was based on the sum of both the deposit and the bonus. In contrast, 13 casinos applied the multiplier solely to the bonus amount. The remaining 15 casinos offered other types of bonuses, such as free spins or promotional money.

This difference in calculation can drastically increase the actual wagering volume. For example, a €100 deposit matched by a €100 bonus with a 30x requirement would result in €6,000 in required bets if both deposit and bonus are included. If the multiplier applies only to the bonus, the required amount drops to €3,000, illustrating a significant ‘hidden cost’ for players.

Wagering requirements varied considerably across the tested casinos. In 12 cases, the requirement was 15x or below, with 7 of these offers having no wagering requirement at all. Another 19 casinos set their requirements between 20x and 35x, while the remaining 19 casinos demanded 40x or higher.

Beyond wagering, other conditions further reduced flexibility. Win caps were present in 29 casinos, or 58% of the sample. The lowest fixed ceiling found in the survey was a mere €25. Game limitations also played a significant role, affecting 37 online casinos. Live casino bets often contributed nothing towards wagering requirements, explicitly in 13-16 casinos. Some bonuses were restricted exclusively to slots, while others listed specific excluded games.

A concerning observation was the lack of clear maximum-bet disclosure. A total of 22 casinos failed to clearly specify a limit in their wagering terms. Another 22 casinos used a maximum bet of around €5 per spin, with violations potentially leading to the forfeiture of both the bonus and all related winnings. Timeframes for bonus usage were also diverse. Deadlines of 3 days or less applied at 13 casinos, while 15 allowed at least 15 days. No wagering timeframe was stated at 8 online casinos.

Background

The test by Kasinohai offers a snapshot of the online casino market targeting Finnish players prior to the country's gambling reforms. Finland is moving towards a licensed market for online gambling, which is expected to begin on July 1, 2027. This regulatory shift aims to provide a more controlled and transparent environment for players. A key component of the new Finnish Gambling Act is the restriction on acquisition bonuses. License holders will have limited scope to offer bonus play money and similar benefits. Welcome bonuses designed to attract new custom will generally be prohibited once the new system is in place.

The findings highlight a critical issue: disclosure. Even seemingly familiar multipliers can lead to vastly different player obligations. Caps, strict deadlines, and excluded games can further diminish the practical value of a bonus. The upcoming Finnish system, by eliminating welcome bonuses, aims to improve player protection. However, any permitted loyalty benefits will still require clear, visible terms to truly serve this purpose.

What it means for German players

For German players, these findings underscore the importance of extreme caution when dealing with bonus offers, especially from offshore casinos. While Germany has its own regulated market through the Glücksspielstaatsvertrag 2021 (GlüStV 2021) and the Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL), these issues mainly concern players who circumvent national regulations. German licensed casinos operate under strict conditions. These include a €1 per spin limit for slots, a monthly deposit limit of €1,000 across all licensed providers, and registration with the LUGAS exclusion system. These measures are designed to protect players and prevent gambling addiction. Therefore, GGL-licensed casinos cannot offer the same aggressive bonus structures seen in the Finnish test, making their offers much more transparent and player-friendly by design. Players in Germany should always prioritize GGL-licensed casinos to ensure they benefit from these protections. The allure of large bonuses from unregulated providers often comes with hidden catches, just as the Finnish study has shown.

What it means for GGL-licensed casinos

For GGL-licensed casinos, the insights from Finland confirm the necessity of transparent and clearly defined terms. The German regulatory framework, particularly the GlüStV 2021, already imposes strong restrictions on bonus offers. While welcome bonuses are not explicitly forbidden, their structure is tightly controlled to prevent problematic gambling behaviors. Casinos licensed by the GGL must ensure that all bonus conditions are easily understandable and fair to players. This includes clear communication about wagering requirements, game contributions, and any time limits. The test in Finland strengthens the argument that strict regulation of bonus terms is crucial for player protection. German regulators will likely continue to monitor foreign practices and potentially refine their own guidelines to ensure the highest standards of transparency and fairness for players within the GGL-regulated market.

„Die zentrale Frage, die der Test aufzeigt, ist die Offenlegung. Ein vertrauter Multiplikator kann sehr unterschiedliche Verpflichtungen schaffen, während Begrenzungen, Fristen und ausgeschlossene Spiele den praktischen Wert weiter schmälern können.“ - Kasinohai Testbericht Autoren, Kasinohai
