Sportwetten-Entertainment über den Wolken: DraftKings und Delta kooperieren

DraftKings and Delta Air Lines launch SkyPicks, a free-to-play in-flight sports contest for passengers aged 21+ on US domestic flights.

The world of gaming does not stop at the stratosphere, even if the legal guardrails at thirty thousand feet are often more complex than on the ground. US gaming giant DraftKings Inc. and Delta Air Lines have opened a new chapter of entertainment together. Since July 29, 2026, passengers on US domestic flights equipped with Wi-Fi can test their sports knowledge without wagering actual cash. This new format is called SkyPicks and is integrated into the airline’s digital ecosystem.

The approach is strategically sound. Since US federal regulations strictly prohibit real-money betting during flights, the partners have opted for a free-to-play model. Passengers use the complimentary on-board Wi-Fi and log in via their Delta SkyMiles account. From there, they access the Delta Sync Wi-Fi homepage, which provides direct access to sports contests. This is not just about passing time; it offers tangible incentives for future travel.

Numbers and facts

The SkyPicks experience is available to all passengers who are at least 21 years old. Verification is handled through the data already stored in their SkyMiles profile. Participants compete in contests related to popular sports such as professional football, basketball, and baseball. They must answer a series of questions, such as which team will score first or who will win the game. To avoid ties, a special tiebreaker involves predicting the final score.

Those who reach the top of the leaderboard can look forward to Delta Gift Cards, which can be redeemed for future flights or upgrades. A notable aspect is the continuity of the game. Once started during the flight, users can track or update their picks after landing via an email link. However, new contests can only be entered while in the air. Jeremy Elbaum, Chief Commercial Officer at DraftKings, sees this as a logical extension of the fan experience.

"At DraftKings, we believe interaction with sports shouldn’t begin and end with the game itself—it should extend to every moment fans care about. Collaborating with Delta gives us the opportunity to reimagine what sports engagement can look like while traveling, bringing innovative ways for fans to stay connected to the games they love—even when they’re in the air." - Jeremy Elbaum, Chief Commercial Officer at DraftKings

Background

This cooperation is a prime example of modern cross-marketing. Delta Air Lines uses SkyPicks to increase the value of its Delta Sync offering. For DraftKings, it serves as an excellent opportunity for customer acquisition. Users who do not yet have an account with the gaming provider are encouraged to register. Anyone wishing to dive into the world of real-money sports betting or online casino games after landing must complete the full registration process of the DraftKings app. This maintains a strict separation between free fun on board and regulated gambling on the ground.

Delta also sees clear value for its brand in this integration. Ranjan Goswami, Chief Marketing and Product Officer at Delta, emphasizes their goal of creating an onboard experience that reflects what customers love on the ground. Since sports are a central topic for many travelers, the integration of SkyPicks fits perfectly into the strategy of a connected travel experience.

"SkyPicks brings that passion onboard in a fun, free-to-play way, giving SkyMiles Members another way to engage with the games and conversations they love while they fly." - Ranjan Goswami, Chief Marketing and Product Officer at Delta Air Lines

Why it matters for German players

For German vacationers often flying with Lufthansa or other European airlines, this offer might seem far away. However, the dynamics of the US market often influence global trends. In Germany, rules under the State Treaty on Gambling 2021 (GlüStV 2021) are extremely strict. Such an offer on board a German aircraft would have to meticulously ensure it is not classified as unauthorized advertising for illegal gambling. While the DraftKings model is entirely free-to-play, the boundaries in Germany are much narrower.

Players from Germany are accustomed to the monthly deposit limit of 1,000 euros across all providers, monitored by the LUGAS system. Furthermore, there is a one-euro stake limit per spin on virtual slots. A system like SkyPicks would have to ensure in Germany that it does not serve as an incentive to bypass these protection mechanisms. Additionally, identity verification in Germany is significantly more time-consuming than in a simple US loyalty program. Nevertheless, the trend shows that the line between entertainment and gambling is increasingly blurring, something the GGL in Halle would certainly scrutinize.

What it means for GGL-licensed casinos

For casinos with a license from the Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL), this US move is an interesting case study in customer loyalty. German providers face immense pressure from the black market, specifically MGA or Curacao casinos that often ignore strict German advertising rules. A legal German casino could use similar free contests to positively charge its brand without immediately violating advertising bans.

However, the legal situation in Germany is complicated: any form of sweepstakes with a proximity to gambling is viewed critically. While US providers like DraftKings cooperate with airlines, German providers on the GGL whitelist must ensure their marketing does not excessively stimulate the gambling instinct. Player protection is the priority. Therefore, we likely won't see a SkyPicks equivalent on flights from Berlin to Munich anytime soon, as the regulatory hurdles in Germany for such partnerships are simply too high.
