NFL suspendiert Scouting Direktor der Arizona Cardinals wegen Wettverstößen

The NFL has indefinitely suspended Ryan Gold, the Arizona Cardinals' director of college scouting, for violating sports betting rules. He allegedly bet on league games and shared insider information regarding team draft picks.

The National Football League (NFL) has indefinitely suspended Ryan Gold, the Arizona Cardinals’ director of college scouting. This decision was announced after the league discovered his violations of its sports betting rules. The allegations are serious, encompassing both placing bets and disclosing internal information.

Gold allegedly provided inside information regarding the team's draft picks prior to their public announcement during the April draft. Furthermore, he is accused of placing parlay wagers on both NFL and college football games. These actions clearly violate the league's strict gambling policies, which prohibit all NFL personnel from wagering on any aspect of the league's activities. Additionally, all employees, excluding players, are forbidden from betting on any other professional, collegiate, international, or or amateur sport.

Numbers and facts

Ryan Gold began his NFL career twelve years ago as a scouting assistant in Arizona. He steadily rose through the ranks. In 2017, he became a scout, a year later a college scouting coordinator, and in 2022, assistant director for college scouting. Last year, he took over as the director of that division. His career is now on hold for the foreseeable future.

The NFL released a statement regarding the incident: > “Although there is no reason to believe the integrity of any NFL game was affected, the League takes any violation of the gambling policy with the utmost seriousness.” - NFL, Official Statement

Sports betting is now legal in 40 U.S. states and in Washington D.C. Of the states that license sportsbooks, about 30 permit wagering on the NFL Draft. However, restrictions often apply. Some states limit the types of wagers available or require bets to be placed before the draft begins. Arizona, where sports betting was legalized five years ago, allows its licensed sportsbooks and online operators to offer markets on the NFL Draft. However, it mandates that any wager must occur before “the earliest affected round” begins.

Background

The Arizona Cardinals have fully supported the league's decision. In a statement, they emphasized that the NFL's policies and expectations for all employees are clear, comprehensive, and consistently communicated. The team stated that its focus remains on preparing for training camp and the 2026 season. Gold has the option to appeal the suspension. This is not the first instance of the league suspending a non-player for gambling violations. In December 2022, Miles Austin, then a wide receivers coach with the New York Jets, was suspended for betting on other sports and playing online casino table games while on team property. Austin has not returned to the league since then.

Another gambling-related issue could impact the NFL next year. Brendan Sorsby, a highly touted quarterback whom the NCAA recently ruled permanently ineligible after he bet on sports and his own team, will be eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft. Sorsby had attempted to participate in a supplemental draft, but the league denied his request. Should Sorsby be drafted or signed by an NFL team, he could face disciplinary action. He had also placed bets on college football and other sports while at Cincinnati and Texas Tech.

Why it matters for German players

The NFL's strict rules on sports betting are a reminder of Germany's efforts to regulate the gambling market and protect players. Since the Gambling Act 2021 (GlüStV 2021) came into force, online gambling in Germany has been legal under clearly defined conditions. The Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States (GGL) is responsible for licensing and supervision. Players are strongly advised to play exclusively with providers on the official GGL whitelist. Casinos listed there guarantee compliance with German laws and player protection measures. These include a deposit limit of 1,000 euros per month via the LUGAS system and a 1-euro stake limit per spin for slot machines. These measures are designed to promote responsible gaming and prevent problematic gambling behavior. The NFL example shows the importance of clear rules and their consistent enforcement to ensure the integrity of the sport and the safety of those involved. For players in Germany, this means they can rely on a protected and fair framework at licensed providers, which aims to curb the illegal market.

What it means for GGL-licensed casinos

For online casinos with a GGL license, such incidents from abroad serve as a warning. They highlight the necessity of adhering to the strict requirements of the German Interstate Treaty on Gambling. The GGL places great importance on preventing manipulation and ensuring player protection measures. Internal policies and employee training are crucial. Any violation can not only lead to legal consequences but also permanently damage the trust of players and regulatory authorities. Specifically, the prohibition of insider betting and transparency in betting processes are key aspects relevant to German providers. The cases in the NFL underscore the need for transparent and traceable processes across the entire gambling sector to ensure integrity and player protection. The GGL is pursuing a consistent course here to consolidate the still-young regulated market and thus make gambling safe for consumers in the end.
