Brightstar Lottery extends contract with Washington’s Lottery until 2036

Brightstar Lottery has signed a seven-year agreement with Washington’s Lottery. The deal includes the supply of 2,200 GameTouch28 vending machines.
Brightstar Lottery has significantly expanded its long-standing partnership with Washington’s Lottery. The parties agreed on a seven-year contract extension. This agreement now runs until June 2036. Brightstar will upgrade the lottery's technological infrastructure to the latest standards.
The provider will supply new terminals and self-service machines. The entire gaming system is also to be modernized. This is an important step for digitalization in the lottery sector.
Numbers and facts
As part of the contract extension, Brightstar Lottery will provide extensive equipment. The plan is to deliver 2,200 GameTouch28 vending machines. In addition, there will be 100 GameTouch20 machines and 3,700 Retailer Pro S2 lottery terminals. These devices will be made available to retailers in the state of Washington. Brightstar has been the main supplier of lottery technology in Washington since 1996. The partnership has thus existed for almost 30 years. Brightstar Lottery plc (NYSE:BRSL) shares closed Monday 0.92 percent lower at $10.82 per share.
Background
Modernizing lottery infrastructure is crucial. It aims to offer players convenient and innovative experiences. This includes self-service and cashless solutions. Brian Bennett, director of Washington’s Lottery, emphasized the importance of continuous innovation:
“For 30 years, Brightstar has helped Washington’s Lottery stay at the forefront of providing lottery retailers and players with convenient and innovative lottery experiences, including self-service and cashless solutions. We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership through the deployment of Brightstar’s latest lottery technology over the next ten years.” - Brian Bennett, Director of Washington’s Lottery
Scott Gunn, Brightstar Chief Operating Officer North America Lottery, also commented positively. He highlighted the importance of the system solutions. They are intended to drive the lottery's growth. At the same time, they are to ensure entertaining and responsible experiences for players. Supporting funds for educational purposes in the state of Washington is also a key concern. The investments in new technologies thus directly benefit the community. This indicates a long-term strategy.
Why it matters for German players
German players are also familiar with such technological developments. The German gambling market has been heavily regulated since the State Treaty on Gambling 2021 (GlüStV 2021). The Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States (GGL) licenses online casinos in Germany. These licenses ensure that providers must meet strict requirements. These include player protection measures. An example is the 1 euro per spin betting limit for online slot machines. A monthly deposit limit of 1,000 euros is also standard.
The central blocking system LUGAS monitors compliance with these limits. It prevents players from being active in several online casinos simultaneously and circumventing the limits. Such systems serve to protect against gambling addiction. Technological advances, such as those introduced by Brightstar in the US, could theoretically also be applied in the German lottery market. However, always under the strict requirements of German law. Cashless systems or self-service terminals must ensure player identification in Germany. This is often more complex in the German context than in other countries. Brightstar's commitment to “responsible experiences” also reflects German requirements. However, the implementation in detail is regulated differently.
What it means for GGL-licensed casinos
For GGL-licensed casinos in Germany, the developments in Washington are only indirectly relevant. They do not directly benefit from new lottery terminals. But they show a global trend. Technology plays an increasingly important role. Also in the area of player protection and responsibility promotion. German online casinos must continuously adapt their systems. The GGL checks this regularly. The technical infrastructure must be stable and secure. Data protection is extremely important.
The automation of processes, as Brightstar aims for, is a topic. German providers also rely on efficient and secure systems. Players in Germany can rely on a regulated environment. Providers on the GGL whitelist are audited. They meet all requirements of the GlüStV 2021. Players should always look for this seal of approval. It guarantees a legal and safe gaming experience.
