Mate Vrdoljak ist neuer Group Head of Sportsbook and Trading bei Fortuna

Fortuna Entertainment Group (FEG) has promoted Mate Vrdoljak to Group Head of Sportsbook and Trading. Vrdoljak, who started at PSK in July 2013, will oversee sportsbook operations in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Fortuna Entertainment Group (FEG) has made a significant personnel decision. Mate Vrdoljak, a long-serving executive from its Croatian subsidiary PSK, has been appointed as Group Head of Sportsbook and Trading. This promotion underscores confidence in internal talent and Vrdoljak's extensive industry experience.

Vrdoljak will now be responsible for the entire sportsbook and trading strategy across FEG's Central and Eastern European markets. This includes key countries such as Croatia, Czechia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Montenegro.

Numbers and facts

Mate Vrdoljak began his career at PSK in July 2013. Initially, he worked in a technical and customer support role. He then progressed through a series of trading-focused positions. In April 2015, he became a bookmaker, a role he held for over six years. In September 2021, he was promoted to Deputy Head of Trading. Just one year later, in September 2022, he took over as Head of Sportsbook for the Croatian operator PSK. Exactly 13 years ago, his journey began, as he himself states. This impressive ascent is now culminating in his appointment as Group Head of Sportsbook and Trading for the entire Fortuna Entertainment Group.

Background

The Fortuna Entertainment Group is a major player in the Central and Eastern European gambling market. It operates in Romania, Poland, Czechia, and Montenegro. Its presence in Montenegro was further strengthened by the acquisition of Lob in October of last year. PSK became part of the group in 2017 when FEG acquired Hattrick Sports Group in a €135 million deal. This transaction allowed FEG to expand its presence in the Balkans and integrate the Croatian brand PSK into its broader sportsbook network. Mate Vrdoljak is enthusiastic about his new role.

“Exactly 13 years ago, I started a journey that shaped my career in ways I could never have imagined. Today, I’m proud and excited to begin a new chapter as group head of sportsbook and trading.” - Mate Vrdoljak, Group Head of Sportsbook and Trading at Fortuna Entertainment Group

He added that leaving his leadership role at PSK is not easy. However, the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with outstanding experts across Croatia, Czechia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia is truly exciting. Vrdoljak thanked the entire FEG team, especially CEO Dieter John, for their trust and the opportunity for further development.

Why it matters for German players

German players often have strict requirements for online gambling providers. Mate Vrdoljak's appointment at FEG shows that even large international gambling corporations are optimizing their internal structures. This could have a positive mid-term impact on the quality and reliability of offerings. For German players, it is crucial to play with providers that hold a valid German license. This means they must be listed on the whitelist of the Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States (GGL).

Only these licensed casinos offer the player protection legally required in Germany. This includes strict measures such as the 1 Euro per spin betting limit and a monthly deposit limit of a maximum of 1,000 Euro. Connection to the central exclusion system, LUGAS, is also mandatory. Providers without such licenses, operating for example with licenses from Malta (MGA) or Curaçao, do not meet these German standards. They are not legal for players in Germany. The risk of having no legal recourse in case of problems is significantly higher with such providers. Players should therefore always look for the official GGL logo.

What it means for GGL-licensed casinos

This personnel decision at FEG has no direct impact on GGL-licensed casinos. The Fortuna Entertainment Group is not primarily focused on the German market at present. Its activities are concentrated in Central and Eastern Europe. Nevertheless, the trend towards professionalization and structuring in large gambling corporations is also relevant for German operators. High-quality standards in managing sports betting and trading operations are generally beneficial.

Indirectly, competition from well-established international providers could increase pressure on German licensees. These licensees must, in turn, always adhere to the regulations of the German Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021. A professional leadership level among competitors can mean that continuous improvement is necessary even in the German environment. Ultimately, players benefit from increased security and fair offerings.
