Entain zieht sich aus Ost-Europa zurück: STS und SuperSport betroffen

Entain, a major gaming industry player, is surprisingly withdrawing from its Eastern European investments. This affects Poland's STS and Croatia's SuperSport. An unexpected move, as the region was previously considered a growth market by the company.

What happened

Entain, an industry giant in gambling, is initiating a phased withdrawal. We received this news in our editorial office last week. The company is exiting Entain CEE. Entain CEE includes STS in Poland and SuperSport in Croatia. This move surprises many. Just under three years ago, Entain touted Central and Eastern Europe as a significant growth market. At that time, management celebrated the acquisitions. Now, a complete reversal follows. Entain is selling its stake in STS to minority shareholders. The Polish company Emtek is acquiring them. Emtek belongs to the Juroszek brothers. This family originally founded STS. For SuperSport in Croatia, Entain will cooperate with Betsson. The Swedish group will take over a large part of the management there. One could say Entain is pulling out its investment. New priorities seem to have been set. This is not a small decision. It will have consequences that we will monitor closely.

Background

When Entain acquired the majority stake in STS, there was great excitement. The deal was finalized in August 2022. The purchase price amounted to the equivalent of 240 million Euros. Great potential was seen in Poland. Poland is a country with nearly 40 million inhabitants. The gambling market there is regulated. Entain wanted to strengthen its global presence. The acquisition was part of an aggressive expansion strategy. SuperSport in Croatia was also part of these plans. The CEE region, meaning Central and Eastern Europe, was considered promising. High growth rates were projected. However, expectations do not seem to have been met. Or the strategic direction has fundamentally changed. There are indications that the entire European market is becoming more complex for large providers. Regulatory hurdles and rising compliance costs could play a role. Some analysts also suspect a strategic shift towards overseas markets. Entain already holds a strong position in the USA. With BetMGM, they are very successful there. Perhaps the focus is now stronger on North America. Or they are concentrating on existing, profitable markets. The European market is highly fragmented. Large players struggle with many different jurisdictions. This generates high costs. This could be a reason for the withdrawal.

Why it matters for German players

For German players, this news has no direct impact. Players in Germany do not use casinos with foreign licenses. This is a clear requirement of German gambling regulation. STS and SuperSport are not accessible in Germany. The GGL requirements are clear here. German players depend on casinos with a German license. These include, for example, jackpotpiraten.de, merkur-slots.de, or loewen-play.de. These providers are subject to strict controls. Player protection is a top priority here. What happens in Poland or Croatia is irrelevant to the German market. Different laws apply there. Different player protection measures. The German legislator has created clear conditions. As an editorial team, we support this. A separation of markets provides clarity. It protects players in this country. Anyone who wants to play it safe should stick to GGL-certified providers. This development at Entain, however, shows something else: Even large international players must adapt their strategies. The global gambling market is constantly in motion. There are many dynamics. Not every move leads to success. Large companies then correct their course. Sometimes abruptly. This is such a case. Players in Germany can rest assured: their casinos remain stable.

What it means for GGL-licensed casinos

The withdrawal of Entain from Entain CEE sends a signal. It signals that the European market is complicated. High investments do not guarantee success. Regulatory frameworks play a major role. For GGL-licensed casinos in Germany, there are no direct conclusions to be drawn from this. They operate in a clearly defined environment. The German license provides planning security. The GGL has established clear rules. Providers such as crazybuzzer.de or etipwin.de know these rules. They adhere to them. This creates trust. And it saves operators stress. They do not constantly have to face new, unforeseen challenges. International patchwork gambling is simply different. Focusing on the domestic market is sometimes an advantage here. A company like Entain juggles many markets. A strategy must function globally. Or it must be adapted. GGL casinos in Germany focus on one market. That is their advantage. The model seems to work. Regulation is strict but transparent. This is important for operators and players. The news from Entain is therefore no cause for concern. Rather, it is a look beyond the horizon. It shows the complexity outside the German licensing model. And indirectly confirms the path of the GGL.
