New York Lottery Modernizes App to Attract Younger Players

The New York Lottery, in collaboration with MRM, has revamped its mobile app to appeal to a younger, digitally-savvy demographic and enhance user experience.
The New York Lottery (NYL) recently launched a completely redesigned mobile app. The goal is to appeal to both long-time players and a younger audience. The modernization was carried out in cooperation with the marketing agency MRM.
Given the declining lottery participation among Gen Z, driven by the rise of sports betting and mobile gaming, a digital fresh start was necessary. NYL aims to keep its offerings attractive. The new app provides a streamlined, interactive interface that integrates elements from mobile games.
Numbers and facts
The redesigned New York Lottery app is the result of a collaboration with relationship marketing agency MRM. It was launched on April 10, 2025. A core goal of the initiative is to counteract the decline in lottery participation among Generation Z. This decline is attributed to the growing popularity of sports betting and mobile gaming.
The app introduces several new features. These include personalized notifications about jackpots and draws, as well as an instant ticket scanning function. A real-time retailer locator helps players find nearby sales points. There is also an educational section for various games and strategies. Tina Braun, EVP and Executive Account Director at MRM, emphasized the importance of a strategically sound customer experience.
“This project makes a great case for leaning into strong, strategy-backed CX expertise as a secret superpower. We needed to deliver fun in a world where there are more forces than ever competing with state lottery systems.” - Tina Braun, EVP and Executive Account Director at MRM
Kyle Boots, SVP and Executive Strategy Director at MRM, highlighted the data-driven approach and modern design used to capture the attention of a new generation of New Yorkers. The redesign aims to increase player engagement through personalization, gamification, and mobile-first design. The new version of the app is the New York Lottery's response to digital evolution and changing player expectations. According to DesignRush, the app was already released on March 31, 2025, with updates until July 2, 2025.
Background
The New York Lottery has existed for a long time. It is a significant financier of public services in New York. Lotteries must adapt to remain relevant. Younger demographics, in particular, use mobile devices. They expect modern, intuitive applications. Sports betting and online casinos often offer a highly interactive and fast gaming experience. Traditional lotteries are thus facing pressure. The partnership with MRM shows that the lottery takes this challenge seriously. It is investing in a digital future. The goal is clear: to ensure competitiveness in the digital age. The integration of gamification elements and personalized services is crucial.
Why it matters for German players
German players can only partially benefit from such developments. The German gambling market is strictly regulated. The Gambling State Treaty 2021 (GlüStV 2021) sets narrow limits. Online casinos with a GGL license must adhere to specific rules. These include a stake limit of one euro per spin on slot machines. The monthly deposit limit of 1,000 euros applies to all players. These limits serve player protection. The nationwide blocking system LUGAS monitors compliance with these requirements.
Innovations such as personalized notifications or gamification elements are only very limited in Germany. The focus here is on preventing gambling addiction. This stands in contrast to a highly gamified player experience. The GGL whitelist lists the legal providers. There, players find safe and regulated options. I generally recommend German players to exclusively use offers from GGL-licensed providers. This is the only way to ensure comprehensive player protection. Providers with licenses from Malta (MGA) or Curacao are not subject to German requirements.
What it means for GGL-licensed casinos
For GGL-licensed casinos in Germany, such international developments primarily mean that a balance between innovation and player protection must be found. German regulations are strict but not static. Future adaptations of the GlüStV could create scope for certain digital improvements. However, direct adoption of gamification approaches, as implemented by the New York Lottery, is currently unlikely.
German providers focus on complying with strict rules. This includes connection to LUGAS and adherence to stake and deposit limits. Improving user-friendliness and modernizing platforms are still important. However, this must happen within the current legal framework. A focus could be on intuitive design and clear information that promotes player protection.
