Flutter Subsidiary Raided: Brazil Probes Betnacional Over Money Laundering

Gambling giant Flutter Entertainment is facing significant pressure in Brazil. Local authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into its subsidiary NSX Brazil, the operator of the prominent betting brand Betnacional. On Friday, August 28, dozens of agents from the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Federal Revenue Service conducted raids in João Pessoa, Recife, and São Paulo. These actions are part of a mission named Operação Jogo de Sombras, or Operation Game of Shadows. The allegations are serious, involving money laundering, tax evasion, and currency evasion.

Investigators accuse NSX Brazil of involvement in a complex money laundering scheme. The amounts involved are staggering, totaling more than R$5 billion, which is approximately 962 million US dollars. These transactions reportedly occurred throughout 2025. A court has already ordered the freezing of assets and funds worth R$191 million due to clear indications of tax irregularities. These discrepancies reportedly date back to both before and after the company secured its Brazilian operating license in 2025.

The scale of the probe is emphasized by the involvement of the Receita Federal, Brazil's internal revenue service. The agency has opened eleven tax proceedings and estimates potential tax recovery of around R$300 million. At the heart of the investigation is the suspected use of a shell company in Curaçao. This setup was allegedly used to make transactions appear as if they took place outside of Brazil, even though the responsible entities were based domestically. Furthermore, attempts were identified to move money abroad via fintech companies to obscure the origin and ultimate beneficiaries of the funds.

NSX Brazil confirmed receiving a summons at its Recife office. The company stated that its legal counsel had not yet gained full access to the case files, making a detailed comment impossible at this stage. However, the management signaled full cooperation.

However, Betnacional is currently losing market share and sits at seventh place in Brazil. Additionally, a change in leadership is imminent, as CEO Peter Jackson is set to step down on September 30.

Even President Lula da Silva, who originally legalized online betting, is now considering restrictions or even a total ban to tighten control over the industry.
